Stan Hulsen: “You don’t want to miss the program”

Stan Hulsen (21) is an enthusiastic alumnus of the Media Future Week. He studied journalism at the HU University of Applied Sciences Utrecht (Hogeschool Utrecht). He took the chance to take part in the event of 2015, where he truly fell in love with creating media. Currently he’s all in new media and technology, combining both in exploring the magical world of 360° video and virtual reality storytelling. We asked Stan five questions about his experience.

What experiences and/or knowledge did you gain from Media Future Week?
Oh, so many. What stood our for me is that I had almost never worked with designers, techies and (mostly) students from other disciplines before. I truly enjoyed that part the most, because a whole new world of creative thinking opens when working with people with all kinds of backgrounds. I think this interdisciplinary approach is the way to go for everyone working in the creative industry.

What one activity or experience did you enjoy so much at MFW, that if you had the chance, you would do again?
Everything. I mean it! From meeting new, awesome people to attending keynote speeches from great inspiring professionals. Working together in your own team and seeing what other teams came up with, which gets you inspired for your next sprint. Oh, and there’s free food. As a student you can’t deny that free food is an important part of the whole deal.

What are your two ‘do’s and don’ts’ of MFW?
Do’s:
1. Smile. Shake hands. Make friends. Participate. Enjoy. That’s five already, right?
2. Fully immersive yourself in the whole experience. There’s no time for funny cat gifs!

Don’ts:
1. Be late for the morning keynote speeches. Yes, it’s great to have a drink or two at your hotel with your new friends, but you don’t want to miss the program. Also, it’s quite rude for both the speaker and your co-participants to enter the auditory late. PS: Absolutely do have a drink in the evening with your new friends!
2. At least try to not get your knee injured so you can’t take two steps looking like you’re a penguin. That was quite a bummer for me. Luckily the staff helped me very well.

What would you say is the best way to prepare for MFW?
Know what’s your comfort zone. Get out of it.

How would you sum up Media Future Week in one word?
Overwhelming.
